Description
The icon is related to the vision of the prophet Moses. The icon was written on a stone that came from the rock where Moses saw the burning, miraculous bush. According to tradition, it is believed that it should be in every home, as it protects it from fire. It is also associated with a story about a house that was saved thanks to a miraculous icon. During the great fire, a woman kept an icon of the Mother of God, the Burning Bush, in front of one of the houses, and only this house was not destroyed. One can also find information that a service was held at Sinai in honor of this icon during severe storms. There are many figures on the icon. In the central part of the icon is the Mother of God along with Christ and a burning bush that does not burn. Often the icon’s depictions vary, but most often the Mother of God holds in her hands symbols of her motherhood as she remained a virgin before and after Christ’s birth. These include Jacob’s ladder as a symbol of lifting people from the fall and raising them from earth to heaven, or the mountain from Daniel’s prophecy. A stone broke away from this mountain, even though no human hand touched it. The image of the Mother of God with the child is inscribed in two intersecting rhombuses. One of them of red color symbolizes flames and in its area are inscribed the symbols of the evangelists: an angel (symbolizing St. Matthew), a lion (symbolizing St. Mark), a calf (symbolizing St. Luke), and an eagle (symbolizing St. John). On the other hand, the second rhombus of green color signifies and also symbolizes the color of the bush, which did not burn despite the fire. In this rhombus are the archangels or cherubim and seraphim. Between the arms of the rhombuses, images of angels can be seen on the icon along with symbols of the elements (wind, warm air, darkness, thunder, hail, lightning, rain and snow). On the corners of the icon or near the edges, one can see depicted scenes from the later motherhood of the Mother of God. The icon is meant to symbolize the devotion of the angels’ ministry to the Goddess and the exaltation of the Divine birth.
