Description
The history of the icon is linked to the person of St. John of Damascus. In the 8th century, he was an advisor to rulers and defended the cult of icons. However, the emperor, who was an iconoclast, plotted an intrigue to show St. John’s disloyalty. The intrigue succeeded and St. John was considered the originator of the conspiracy. He was ordered to cut off his right hand, which was hung in the city square. St. John begged that his hand be given back to him. He put it to the wound and began to pray to the Mother of God, hoping she would help him. He promised to praise the Most Holy Mother of God for the rest of his life. He fell asleep from exhaustion. In a dream, the Mother of God appeared to him, commanding him to now work sincerely with her hand. When John woke up, he saw that his hand was in place, healthy. He began to praise the Mother of God with the words: “Thee rejoices the Fullness of Grace, the whole creation, the choirs of angels and the human race…”. St. John went to Jerusalem and was ordained a monk there. To commemorate the miracle, he brought with him a silver votive in the shape of a hand and had his hand placed in the lower corner on the icon as a symbol of his healing.
