Description

This icon was given to the principality of Moscow in the 14th century by the Cossacks. It was meant to strengthen the fight against the dissenters. It is believed that thanks to the Donskoye Bogurodzica, victory was achieved in the battle of Kulikovo Pole in 1380. This icon was also taken on the expedition to Kazan. After the victory, the icon was placed in the Kremlin. At that time, the nickname ‘Donsky’ was assigned to the Muscovite prince. And this was also the nickname given to the miraculous icon of the Mother of God. The icon lived to have its own monastery with the same nickname: the Donskoy.
