Description

The Icon of the Iverion Mother of God is located in the Iverion Monastery on St. Mount Athos. It is famous for its many miracles. Its history begins with the fact that this icon was in the house of a certain widow living with her son. It was the time of iconoclasm, so soldiers came one day to take the icon from the woman. When one of the soldiers wounded the Mother of God on the icon with a spear, he thus left a mark on his cheek on the icon. Blood flowed from the wound. At the same moment, the soldier repented and asked for forgiveness. After the incident, he began to believe in God and dedicated the rest of his life to him, becoming a monk. A landlady from Nice, wanting to protect the icon from further incidents, decided to carry it to the water. To her surprise, the icon did not sink, but floated away in an upright position. The widow’s son traveled to Thessaloniki shortly after the incident, and then to the Holy Mountain of Athos, and was ordained a monk there. He passed on for years the story of the miraculous icon that did not sink. The same icon of the Mother of God also once sailed to the Holy Mountain. She appeared in a pillar of fire on the sea. The Mother of God appeared to the monks, ordering them to go for the icon on the water, without fear of sinking. This is what happened. With prayer and the help of the Most Holy Mother of God, the icon reached the Holy Mountain. Since then, the icon has been the “guardian” of the monastery, protecting the holy place. Local tradition says that when the icon of the Icon of the Iverian Mother of God disappears from the Holy Mountain, the end of the world will come, which is why it is not taken out of Athos.
In 2000, a faithful copy of the icon was donated to the monastery on Holy Mount Grabarka by Athos monks, thus becoming an icon to which many of the faithful go.
