Description

This image of the Mother of God did not become popular until the 15th century. The apparition of this icon took place in Russia. A certain woman was often tormented by demons, to the point that she wanted to end her life herself many times. When she once regained consciousness, she began to ask the Most Holy Mother of God for help. At the same time, she promised that when she was well, she would dedicate the rest of her life to God and spend it in the monastery. The woman’s prayer was answered and she was healed. However, she forgot her promise and returned to her old life. After some time, the woman declined spiritually and physically and then the Mother of God reminded her of what she had promised. When she later became even more ill, Our Lady appeared to her again, ordering her to buy an icon from the iconographer Gregory. Miracles began to happen in front of the purchased icon and the woman recovered again.

The Mother of God is depicted as the Mother showing complete emotion and tenderness. She tries to protect Christ from his pending suffering on the Cross. Jesus Christ turns his gaze from the Mother of God towards one of the archangels. The archangels hold the attributes of the Lord’s passion: Cross, spade, vessel for gall and vinegar. Often in this icon, a single sandal is slipped from Christ’s foot. The hands of the Mother of God and Jesus joined together are a symbol of the foreshadowing of Christ’s passion. The Mother of God knew from the beginning what fate awaited her Son.
