Description
St Panteleimon was brought up in a believing family, which taught him to believe in the one God. He received medical training and served as a doctor at the imperial court. For his holiness of life and conscientious discharge of his duties, the saint received from God the gift of healing the sick with prayer. He expected nothing in return. This did not escape the attention of other doctors, who, out of jealousy, accused him of being a Christian. Saint Panteleimon was put on trial and subjected to numerous tortures. When the saint endured scorching by fire, molten lead or waterboarding, the emperor ordered his head beheaded and his body burnt. However, even after death, God did not allow the saint’s body to be burnt. Today, the head of Saint Panteleimon is located on Saint Mount Athos.
Saint Panteleimon is the patron saint of people asking for health, physical as well as spiritual, especially for epilepsy. He is also considered an intercessor for doctors, Orthodox soldiers and sailors.
