Description

St Spiridon was born in Cyprus and, leading a family life, tried to lead as religious a life as possible. After the death of his wife, he gave himself completely to God and was elected Bishop of Tremithus. For Spiridon’s humility and his virtuous life, God granted him the gift of reading people’s minds and performing miracles. After his death, his hand was cut off, which after some time was returned to the relics of St Spiridon in 1984. It miraculously began to resemble the rest of the relic and very slowly covered itself with flesh. It is this hand of the saint that is visiting different parts of Greece, including Poland in 2015 for adoration of the saint.

According to the people of Corfu, St Spiridon saved the island from several plagues and pestilence.

It is interesting to note that the monks change the saint’s red cloth shoes every year because the soles wear out. The people of Corfu believe that their saint walks through the streets of the town protecting its inhabitants. The worn-out shoes are cut into small pieces that are distributed to pilgrims. The Corfiyans carry them in their wallets for good luck.

The faithful most often turn to Saint Spiridon for healing from illnesses and during famines. He is also the patron saint of potters, sailors and those travelling by sea.
